Free games like the classic Flash games, in your browser
Updated · 4 min read

For a generation of players, the browser was the arcade. Game portals full of short, inventive games filled school computer labs and slow afternoons: tunnel runners, one-button swingers, tank duels, tower conquest, ragdoll comedy. They loaded in seconds, taught themselves in a level, and were built around one sharp idea each. When browser plugins were retired, a lot of that library went with them.
The spirit never went away. Modern browsers can run the same kind of game without any plugin, on a computer or a phone. This guide lists the games on Knockout that were made in that tradition: our own designs, in the genres that defined the era. All of them are free and nothing needs installing.
What made those games great
- One idea, done well. Each game had a single mechanic, and every level found a new way to use it.
- Short levels. A minute or two each, with an instant retry, so a failure was a reason to go again.
- Stars and scores. Three stars for a perfect run gave you a reason to replay what you had already beaten.
- No barriers. No account, no download, no tutorial screen: you were playing within seconds.
Runners: Spinward
Spinward is a tunnel runner set in space. You run forward on your own through a tunnel with four to eight sides, steering left and right and jumping the gaps. The twist is that every wall can be the floor: step off the edge onto a wall and the whole view rolls round with you. Cracked tiles fall soon after you touch them, dark tiles are solid but only light up when you get close, and ramps and boost pads carry you over gaps you could not jump otherwise.
There are 40 levels, plus an endless run and a daily run, both with leaderboards. Arrows or A and D steer and Space jumps; on a phone, hold a side to steer and tap to jump.
One-button swing: Swoopline
Swoopline is the purest one-button game on the site. Hold the mouse, Space or a finger to catch the nearest hook and swing; let go to fly. Build speed through the swing, bounce off pads, slip past walls and grab moving hooks on the way to the flag. Reaching it is the easy part; getting there fast enough for three stars is the game. There are 40 levels and a daily course with a leaderboard for the best time.
Tank games: Tank Duel and Shard Tanks
Tank Duel is the classic top-down tank battle, built around shells that ricochet off walls. Bank shots around corners, lay mines and work through 24 campaign levels, or hold out in survival waves. It also plays as a couch game with phones as controllers, and online with friends.
Shard Tanks is the arena kind: break drifting crystal shards for score, level up to 45, spend a point a level on eight stats and pick a new hull at 15, 30 and 45. Play a free-for-all against computer tanks for a public best, or a three-minute duel against a rival tank. More on it in The best free io-style games to play in your browser.
Tower conquest: Flagfall
Flagfall is the island-conquest game. Your islands grow troops; drag from them to send boats at rival islands and take their flags. Bigger garrisons grow into villages, towns and citadels that grow faster and defend better, and harbors, forts and lighthouses change each map. It has 40 levels against one to three computer captains, three stars for winning inside par, a daily sea with a leaderboard, and online seas for two to four players.
Physics and aim: Balloon Burst and Leg Day
Balloon Burst is the aim-and-throw puzzler: drag back and let go, and a dart flies on an arc, popping every balloon in its path. Special balloons (Spike, Boom, Frost, Triple, Bonus and Loop) change what each throw does, rubber lets you bank a shot, and wooden walls get in the way. It has 40 levels with three stars each, plus a daily layout.
Leg Day is pure ragdoll comedy. Four keys move a sprinter's thighs and knees, and the goal is to finish 100 meters without falling on your face. It is hard and very funny, and two people can race on one keyboard; see The best two-player games on one keyboard.

How to get the most out of them
- Chase the stars, not just the finish. Most of these games are easy to clear and hard to master, and replaying an early level for three stars teaches the trick you will need later.
- Play the daily. Spinward, Swoopline, Flagfall, Balloon Burst and Leg Day each have one, the same for everyone that day, so your score means something.
- Use the keyboard on a computer. Every game here has full keyboard controls, and they are usually faster than the mouse.
Why play them here
Every game on this list runs on a computer with a keyboard and mouse, and on a phone with touch. They load quickly and keep your progress and best scores in your browser between visits.
