The best free online games to play with friends
Updated · 5 min read

The hard part of playing with friends online is rarely the game. It is getting four people with four different devices into the same place at the same time, with nobody stuck on an install screen or a sign-up form. So this guide starts with how that works here, then gets to the games, sorted by the kind of night you want.
How to get everyone into one game
Every game on Knockout runs in the browser on a phone, a computer or a tablet. There is nothing to install. Pick a game, tap Create a Game, and share the invite link or the QR code in your group chat. Friends who open it sit right down at your table, on whatever device is in their hand.
- Short a player? Any open seat can take a computer player at Easy, Normal or Hard, so three friends can still play a four-seat card game.
- Every table has its own chat, and a party keeps your group together with voice chat while you hop from game to game.
- Can't all play at once? Turn-based games offer A turn a day, with an alert when it's your move. More on that in Games to play with long-distance friends and on a video call.
If nobody can decide, What should we play? on the home page asks how many of you there are, where you are playing and the mood, and suggests three games in three taps.
For a loud, fast night: action and racing
When the group wants to shout at each other, start with something in real time. These are short rounds, easy to learn in a minute, and fun even for the person who finishes last.
Kart DashSolo or 2-4 players
Wobble DashSolo or 2-8 players
ShootoutSolo vs bots or 2-8 online
Sky SpiresSolo or 2-8 players
- Kart Dash is 3D kart racing on eight courses in two cups. Drift for mini-turbos, grab items and look for the shortcuts. Race friends online or split the screen on one device.
- Wobble Dash is an obstacle-course party show: spinning bars, swinging hammers, fake tiles, a survival round and a final for the crown. Nobody is good at it, which is the point.
- Shootout is a first-person arena shooter for up to eight, with eight modes from free-for-all to capture the flag and ten maps. Bots fill the empty spots.
- Sky Spires puts everyone on their own spire above the clouds. A random item lands in every bag every 20 seconds; build bridges, shove and glide, and be the last one standing.
For working together: co-op
Co-op games are the quiet secret of a good friends night. Nobody gets knocked out early, the stronger players help the newer ones, and a narrow escape feels better than a win. These are our favorites for two to four.
Tether TowerSolo or 2-4 co-op
Last StandSolo or 2-4 co-op
Hollow HouseSolo or 2-4 online
Outbreak2-4 players
- Tether Tower chains you to your partners on a climb up a giant clock tower. When one person slips, everyone braces; when one falls, the chain drags the rest.
- Last Stand is a zombie shooter for up to four: hold a roadside stop against endless rounds, earn points, buy and upgrade guns, and see how long the team lasts.
- Hollow House is a horror escape. Find the key, the fuses and the safe's code in a manor that rearranges itself, and get out before dawn. Play it with the lights off.
- Outbreak is a board game where the table plays against the board: treat hot spots, pool your cards and research four cures before the map is overrun.
For a long evening: board games
Board games reward a group that wants to talk, trade and plot. The browser handles the setup, the rules and the scoring, so you get straight to the part that matters: deciding who to trust.
- Bogmoor is our featured trading game for one to six: build settlements, trade cards, and race to the points target. Read Bogmoor beginner strategy guide before your first game.
- Tile Towns is a calmer pick for two to five: draw a tile, grow the countryside, and place builders on roads and towns before anyone else claims them.
- Tessera is a small-map strategy game of tribes, built for one hand on a phone, with exact combat odds and a turn-a-day option.
- Riverboat Routes has everyone claiming river lanes to fill secret cargo orders. Simple turns, a lot of tension near the end.
There are many more in Free board games online, with no download.
For a table of four: card classics
Card games are the easiest thing to play on a phone while you talk about something else. Partnership games are especially good with two couples or two pairs of old friends.
- Spades: partners bid their tricks and make them. Spades are trump, and bags come back to bite.
- Euchre: twenty-four cards, two bowers and a partner across the table. Fast and easy to pick up.
- Hearts: three to six players, pass three cards, dodge the queen, or take every heart and shoot the moon.
- Gin Rummy and Cribbage are the two-player classics, covered in The best 2-player games to play online.
For a crowd: party games
With five or more people, switch to games built for a crowd. Everyone plays on their own phone, so nobody has to pass a device around, and the rounds are short enough that late arrivals can join the next one.
- Scribble Brawl: one player draws, everyone else races to guess. The fastest guess scores the most.
- Fib Finder: a strange-but-true fact with a blank. Everyone writes a convincing fake answer, then tries to spot the real one.
- Undercover: two teams, one-word clues and 25 code words. Find your team's words and never touch the trap.
- Village Night: for five to twelve. Something is taking villagers each night; talk, accuse and vote before it is too late.
If you are all in the same room, put the game on a TV and use your phones as controllers. Party games on the TV with phones as controllers explains how.
For friends who like a daily ritual
Some of the best games with friends are not played at the same time at all. Daily puzzles are the same for everyone each day, so the group chat becomes the scoreboard. Try Five Letters, one secret word a day in six guesses, and Daily Ten, ten trivia questions a day against the clock. There is a whole list in Daily word and logic puzzles worth keeping a streak for.
Tips for a smoother night
- Send the invite link before people sit down. Opening it early means everyone is in the lobby when you start.
- Start with something short. A ten-minute game warms the group up before a long board game.
- Mix in computer players when numbers are odd. A bot at Easy is a good way to teach a new friend without anyone waiting on them.
- Use the rules button. Every game has its rules one tap away, so nobody needs to explain from memory.
- Save the long games for weekends, or play them a turn a day across the week.
That is the short list. The full catalog has hundreds of games, from solitaire to sports, and every one of them is free to play in your browser. Pick one above, send the link, and see who shows up.
