Quick games to play on your phone in five minutes
Updated · 4 min read

Most of the time you reach for a game on your phone, you have about five minutes: a queue, a bus ride, the kettle boiling, a meeting that has not started yet. That time deserves a game that starts instantly, plays with one thumb, and lets you stop at any moment without losing anything. This guide is a list of exactly those games, all free in your phone's browser.
Why the browser works for this
- Nothing to install and no storage used. Open the site, tap a game, play.
- No sign-up needed for solo games and dailies. Your stats and streaks are kept on your phone as you play.
- Add the site to your home screen and it opens like any other icon, full screen.
- Every game here plays by touch on a phone, with big targets for your thumb.
One-thumb arcade games
These are the purest five-minute games: one control, instant restarts, and a high score that always seems one more try away.
- Tower Stack: tap to drop each slab on the tower. Whatever hangs over gets sliced off, and perfect drops grow it back. Watch the edge, not the slab.
- Flap Happy: tap to flap a little bird through the gaps. One touch and it is over. Tap in a steady rhythm rather than reacting late.
- Road Hopper: hop across roads, rails and rivers without getting flattened or dunked, collecting coins to unlock characters.
- Hop Up: bounce ledge to ledge, higher and higher, shooting down spikers and saucers on the way.
Puzzles you can put down
Some puzzles punish you for stopping. These do not: they are turn-based, so you can pause mid-game and pick up exactly where you left off.
- Merge 2048: slide, merge and double up. Keep your biggest tile in a corner and build toward it.
- Block Fit: drop the three pieces you are dealt onto the grid and clear full rows and columns. Leave room for the awkward long pieces.
- Water Sort: pour colored water between tubes until each holds one color. Calm, satisfying and endless.
- Fruit Drop: drop fruit into a jar and merge two of a kind into the next one up, from a blueberry to a pumpkin. There is a Daily Jar too.
- Traffic Jam and Flip Lights are classic sliding and switching puzzles with hundreds of short levels, each with a par to beat.
The daily five minutes
If you want your quick break to add up to something, play a daily. They are the same for everyone each day, they keep a streak, and most take two to five minutes.
- Five Letters: one secret word and six guesses. Two or three minutes, and a result to share.
- Queens Court: one queen in every row, column and color, and no two touching. A small grid that rewards one clear deduction at a time.
- Mini Cross: a pocket-size crossword, usually solved in a few minutes.
- Daily Ten: ten trivia questions against the clock.
There are many more dailies, from logic grids to number puzzles, in Daily word and logic puzzles worth keeping a streak for.
A quick dose of action
When you want something faster than a puzzle, these give you a full burst of action in a couple of minutes.
- Slice Storm: fruit flies up in 3D and you swipe to slice it. The 75-second Rush mode is a perfect five-minute game, and there is a Daily Rush.
- Spiral Drop: a ball bounces down a spinning tower and you drag to turn it so the ball drops through the gaps. Fall through three in a row and it smashes anything.
- Steady Pour: hold to pour, let go on the line. Easy to learn, surprisingly hard to master.
- Block Drop: rotate, drop and clear lines as the stack speeds up. The sprint mode is made for short breaks.
- Snake: eat, grow, don't bite your own tail. Still one of the best one-minute games ever made.
Cards and brain games
- TriPeaks: clear three peaks one higher-or-lower card at a time. A hand takes a couple of minutes and has a daily deal.
- Solitaire: the classic, with tap to auto-move and undo for anything. A daily deal that is always winnable.
- Brain Bench: seven quick tests of reaction time, memory and aim. Chase your personal bests.
- Echo: watch the lights, hear the tones, play them back, one more step every round.
- Type Race: type the passage to drive your car against three computer cars and your own best run.
Playing with someone, quickly
Five minutes is also enough for a game with a friend. Drop Four takes about two minutes a game, and so does a round of Bluff Dice. Share the invite link from Create a Game and your friend joins on their own phone, or play the computer at Easy, Normal or Hard. For longer two-player games, see The best 2-player games to play online.
Make it a habit, not a time sink
- Pick games with natural endings. A daily puzzle or a single round of Tower Stack ends on its own; endless modes do not.
- Use dailies as your default. One puzzle a day keeps a streak and never eats an hour.
- Keep sound off in public. Every game respects the site's sound switch.
- Save the deep games for later. Our big strategy and party games are better on a free evening; see The best free online games to play with friends.
Open the site, pick one game from each section above, and you have a week of five-minute breaks sorted.
